I am writing this article not only for you but for myself. I am one of those weird people that live to work, and I really have to take regular inventory of my schedule and life to determine which things in my life are God-given assignments that He has called me to be faithful to and which things are things I have ordained apart from God. Too many times I burn the candle at both ends only to end up frustrated at the quality of my work, frustrated at the limited time I have, and frustrated with family and friends around me that are there to support me. The Psalms contain some great truths that remind us to get some sleep.
1. Get Some Sleep Because Refusing it IS NOT HELPING YOU.
Psalm 127:2- In vain you get up early and stay up late, working hard to have enough food-yes, He gives sleep to the one He loves.
Do we really believe that it is vain, pointless, a waste of time, to refuse sleep? Why do we push away God’s gift to us?
God’s gift to us are not only good, they are the best. Let us give us our house to the Lord and trust Him to watch over our city (Psalm 127:1) and take advantage of the gift that He has given us.
2. Get Some Sleep Because The Lord Will Help You.
Psalm 144:1- May the Lord, my rock, be praised, who trains my hands for battle and my fingers for warfare. He is my faithful love and my fortress, my stronghold and my deliverer. He is my shield and I take refuge in Him; He subdues my people under me.
I have stayed awake many nights stressing and worrying about a task or situation awaiting me the next day. Instead of giving it to the Lord and praying for wisdom I think on it for hours. I will spend time creating my own game plan and reading books until the late hours. All of these things have their place and are commanded by God but if it is done without a spirit of true rest in the Lord, it is in vain. When all the research, strategy, and counsel from others is done, I ultimately have to rest in the promise that God will help me and go to bed.
3. Get Some Sleep Because God Tells us We are Valuable.
Let us close this post with thinking on the these precious words from our Savior.
Matthew 6:26- Look at the birds of the sky; they don’t sow or reap or gather into barns, yet your heavenly father feeds them. Aren’t you worth more than they?
1. Get at least one extra hour of sleep each night for the next three nights.
2. Give your specific tasks and projects to the Lord in prayer right before going to sleep. Perhaps you could write your prayer in a journal so that you can look back and see how God helped you.
