But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
God is always gracious and always faithful to provide for our needs. Often, He give us exceedingly beyond all that we could ask or think (Ephesians 3:20). Our God is also our Father (Matthew 7:11). He knows our needs (Matthew 7:32). He commands us to be anxious for nothing(Philippians 4:6) .
We often find ourselves, however, worried and tied down with financial cares. Many of us have school loans, medical bills, house repairs, rent and mortgage payments, and diapers to buy. I have found that much of my anxiety and financial concerns don’t come from a lack of resources but from a lack of vision, namely, not having straight in my mind where those resources are going. Sometimes I look at my bank statement and think, “wow, that was an impulse buy” or “that was dumb.” I am not out of debt yet, and I am not perfect in managing money by any means, but God has been guiding and helping me in this area by teaching me a few important principles.
God Will Supply All of My Needs- A Budget Therefore Lets Me See God Provide For Them.
When I have a list of prioritized bills, I see time and time again God provide above and beyond what I need. When I’m able to go down the list of paid bills, I am able to give thanks to God for providing. I am also able to pray over needs that I still have in a specific way. God delights to hear these praises and petitions. Money now becomes a means of drawing me to God not away from God.
2. God Is Forgiving- A Budget Therefore Shows Me Areas That I Need To Repent Of.
When I establish a budget and evaluate my spending in light of that budget, I am then able to see areas where my priorities are off. I can see areas where I have made selfish and impulsive purchases and repent of my sin. I can then ask God for grace to walk in His truth and to be a better steward.
3. God Is Giving- A Budget Therefore Helps Me Lay Up More Treasure In Heaven.
As I budget, I can take time to remember that this life is not all there is. Every cent that God gives me is a choice to purchase temporal joys or eternal joys. I can stand amazed that the God who gave me all things to begin with would reward me again for using those gifts for His glory. God truly is a God who keeps on giving out of his sheer love, mercy, and grace. Why would I worship the gift over the giver?
