Most of us live ordinary lives. We are not missionaries overseas in dangerous places. We don’t live in the inner parts of the city. We work at a desk. Some of us aren’t even around people much due to the nature of our work! Many of us have read excellent books such as Radical by David Platt or missionaries biographies about Hudson Taylor and Jim Elliot. Deep down there is a longing for all of those who follow Christ to make a lasting impact for the cause of Christ. I believe there should be a desire to venture and to risk, but for many of us the clear calling for God is to venture and to risk at our work place and in the small town that we live in. Michael Horton’s Book entitled, “Ordinary: Sustainable Faith in a Radical, Restless World” gives some great and practical exhortation to Christians of all callings to be radically faithful especially in a culture that is constantly going towards extremes and constant change. 1 Corinthians 4:2 says, “Moreover, it is required of stewards that thy be found faithful.”
My life has not been drastically changed by people who blow in and blow out. Think of the men and women in your life who have made the most impact on your life spiritually. For me, it was the Sunday School teacher who showed up every week. It was My Senior Pastor who pastored the same church for over 30 years. It was my youth pastor who taught me from the time I was in 1st grade until the time I graduated. It is my current boss and Senior Pastor who has served our church through ups and downs for nine years. It was and is my father and mother who worked hard, home educated four children, and served in our local church every Sunday. May we all be ordinary, faithful servants to our Lord.
